Moving house. 2018

She usually looks at materials through their visual qualities, textures, surfaces, and colours. When she started to work with leather, she identified that in a tactile and visual manner, a leather sheet is a very three-dimensional material: its front, back, and edge surfaces are extremely different and contrasted.

From this observation, she initiated a process that explores how these three dimensions could be used to create visuals. In the end, she constructs rich compositions that combine both 3D and 2D languages into a collage of leathers. In this way, she reveals leather as a tool for visual expression much richer than the usual surface use which is made out of it.

CUTE anthropomorphism and thingification. 2017

These collaborative works by SEWAJI are one of the representations based on the research ‘CUTE’ that touched upon many hidden aspects of the striving for, and expression of, cuteness. With their own artistic perspective on ‘cute’, they present communicative objects and statues that imitate each other’s cuteness.

For them, imitating is one of the critical strategies, which demonstrate the expressive quality of ‘cute’ world. In this project, SEWAJI plays with two kinds of cuteness: natural cuteness in living creatures and engineered cuteness in inanimate objects.

Petit dance 2016

Petit H is a small brand within Hermes. It was founded using Hermes’ old materials from the past, as well as slightly awed materials that could not be used, which gave it the unique ability to tell a completely new story and thereby giving birth to a brand named Petit H. During my visit of the Pantin factory located in Paris, I was able to witness a factory resembling a fairy tale scenery, where each item was carefully made by hand and displayed the value and story of the Hermes brand.

I was received a great deal of inspiration during my visit. This Petit H project respected the value of the Hermes brand, and it was a project creating an object capable of telling a story like only Petit H could.

These multi-layered placeness and time is a key issue of SoA’s practice.

Geodesic Chair-Vault for the Interspace Dialogue 2013 Interspace Dialogue is a project to install a small-scale screening room for the experimental film festival Off and Free inside Seoul Museum of Art. Plastic parasol chair is one of typical temporary furniture especially to be used for outdoor big events (concert, performance, campaign, etc.) SoA rent 400 white plastic chairs and make a temporary theater inside the crystal room in the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA). The temporary theater is designed to be geodesic chair-vault inside which people sit on the same plastic parasol chair and watch the experimental film of Marina Abramovic.

The theater made of only chairs provoke the question, ‘‘what is the theater?’ For the geodesic chair-vault, we invent new tectonics of stacking chairs converting the compressive force into tension force. We make a space in between below chair and upper chair due to tie a cable which is shorter than the length of chair leg. So we can control the stacking space. The existing details which are holes for drainage on the parasol chair and handle for moving on the backside of chair are used as the vault detail. Finally tensile forced vault construction using 400 pieces of plastic parasol chairs are made. After film festival done, these whole chairs be returned.

Society of Architecture (SoA) was founded in 2010 at Seoul. SoA is young architect group working on projects about environment construction in various size of scale based on analysis from the social condition of architecture and urbanism. Based on understanding about modern life, we are searching for new possibilities of architecture that can make it more enrich.

She graduated from the women’s fashion department of Central St Martin’s, London. While studying she gained work experience at John Galliano and other fashion houses in Paris. She participated in several international competitions including ITS4. After graduating she worked at Antonio Marras in Italy.

Kiho Kim majored in clothing and textile department at Hangseung University in Seoul. After graduating he worked at Parkyounsoo studio in Seoul. Then he studied pattern making at Carlo Secoli in Milan and fashion design at Polimoda in Florence. During his study he participated in several international competitions including ITS3. After finishing his studies he worked at Antonio Marras in Italy.

COINONIA’s universal theme is creating ‘Conceptual Contemporary’ garment and accessory for creative women. The collection pieces are first created on the mannequins to be given a life and a story by hand under a seasonal concept. Experimental and architectural shape, dynamic cutting, and sensitive details and colors are then introduced to define their characters. Narrative and conceptual mood is always there as the essence of their works. Feminine but masculine, still but dynamic, tender but hard… These contradictions are the source of their creation to be mixed up and give a birth to new designs.
