Love & Faith, 2005  Chinese ink and color on paper - Screen type   133 x 94cm

Seo paints Oriental painting with Chinese ink and color on paper. However, she doesn't stay in the old and traditional way of painting; she invents her own way of contemporary Oriental painting. By using traditional medium such as Chinese ink and paper, she paints landscape painting described by graceful lines, voluminous feelings and the beauty of space. In addition to this, she paints human character which has face of herself and puts this human figure into everywhere in the painting like between trees or on the rocks. The human figure looks like a mountain wizard from an ancient story, and it is actually herself. Seo is playing and enjoying surroundings around her in the painting like a real mountain wizard who lives in the deep in the mountain. The face expression of hers is exaggerated in the painting with a big mouth showing many teeth and a big face. Such way of expressive representation shows how fun is an idyllic life. The paintings of Seo, therefore, show that Seo becomes a wizard of mountain and enjoys landscape and an idyllic life without any worries or troubles.

Son Donghyun, (b.1980) started to gain attention two years ago, when <The Portrait of Hero, Mr. James Bond> was exhibited at Gallery Ccot and his first solo exhibition <<Pa-Ap Icon>> was held in the Art Space Hue. Starting from these works, artist painted portraits of familiar characters in Disney animation or Hollywood movies such as Batman, Robocop, Bugs Bunny and Golum. They are painted on yellow tinted Korean paper with pigments used in Oriental Painting and the names and the prefix were made up with phonics of Chinese characters to create speciousness as Oriental portraits. It is unexpected to meet the familiar modern characters in the paintings that look like they are coming from the museum at a glance.

The first thing came up on artist's mind when he pondered on the idea of unification of tradition and modernity was 'What would Kim Hong-Do paint if he lives in the contemporary era?' It is absolutely reasonable to see street scene of Dong-du cheon in the folk painting of Kim Hong do, to appreciate the image TV stars we adore in the portraits or to observe personified character animals wandering around in the Oriental landscape painting.
