The title of the STARSICA AW 2018 Collection is “Seirēn sings for a Mad King”. Ike Seungik Lee, the designer of STARSICA, took his inspiration from learning the phenomenon of otherness. The idea of this collection is primarily derived from observing the behaviours of the unspecified masses around us. We utilize the vision of those who interpret the egos and lives of others through their own subjective perspectives. In essence we are all the Mad King.

With this in mind, the collection constitutes a sense of dramatic construction, and draws on reinterpreting Greek tragedy as a fashion monologue. The playful motifs in wings and soft fur which can be understood as symbols of Siren, the troubadour, have been reinterpreted with a modern twist and found in the prints of Ike’s own paintings and the patterns created by embroideries. These echo the essence of mythological elements such as the star, bird and semiotic signs.

STARSICA 2017 S/S

Originally from Seoul, Ike Seungik Lee studied BFA Sculpture at Seoul National University, subsequently MA Fashion at Kingston University. Upon graduating in 2016, Ike launched his own label ‘STARSICA’. By combining the distinctive values from his earlier art works, Ike incorporates functionality with his conceptual messages, thus showing his ability to evolve into the brand ‘STARSICA’.

Ike takes his inspiration from the philosophical reasoning of phenomenon with an emphasis on a concept of the “everyday wear of luxury with an anxiety of a modern society” and playful imagery with exaggerated layers and textures. STARSICA presented the first collection ‘VISITOR’ during London Fashion Week September 2017, after being selected as one of the Fashion Scout’s Ones-To-Watch Awards. The label continues to pursue the concept of modern elegance through an experimental approach.

Designed by Samoo in collaboration with Kunwon & ABLine, the new cultural facility is designed to be fully integrated into the surrounding natures and exhibit historical records of Korea’s presidents. Based on the government’s masterplan to create a new administrative city approximately 130km south of Seoul, the Presidential Archive was developed as one of the most prominent infrastructure for the new Sejong city.

The cubical form of the main building was inspired by the box which holds the great seal used by presidents when signing official administrative and diplomatic documents. The two main materials of the box, brass and wood were reinterpreted respectively into stone and glass.

Designed as a box inside a box, the solid inner wall reduces thermal conductivity while the exterior layer provides additional energy efficiencies. The transparent exterior layer of the cube operates as a vertical cool-tube system that cools the building during the summer while enabling natural ventilation during spring and autumn. The unique façade also reflects the surrounding during the day and lights-up as a prominent landmark during the night.

As one of the main infrastructures to the Sejong city, the Presidential Archive is located strategically adjacent to the Sejong Lake forming a cultural axis which also converges with the natural green axis of the central park. Because of the unique location, the facility will not only be easily visible but also act as the hub for the community of Sejong city.

In order to create a user-friendly facility, careful considerations have been given to the landscape design as well. Parts of the building have been raised as a green-roof which is connected to the surroundings and more than 50% of the site is fully covered in landscape. And by extending the circulation paths of the building into these areas, many of the landscapes serve as additional outdoor event locations.

As a sustainable building that utilizes innovative design, cool-tube systems and natural lighting was utilized while heat-loss have been minimized. The green-roof created on the gently sloping podium also aids in sustainability by reducing heat loads. BIPV and PV panels have been installed throughout the exterior of the building to realize a truly sustainable building. With innovative design and sustainable strategies, the construction of the facility have been recently completed and is currently in preparation of the exhibition contents for official opening.

2017 PREFALL

The collection is titled “Adrenalin & Dysfunction,” and Joon specifically found inspiration for it in Berlin’s cycling culture and the sprawl of bright construction sites spread throughout the city. This is translated into a slew of neon jackets and floor windbreakers wrought from merino wools and custom dyes. The dual words in the line’s title are the only graphics that appear in the collection, and the closest semblance to a print is the repeated use of thick stripes throughout the array of shirts.

Elsewhere, the collection is grounded by pieces like retro-leaning sweaters, loose-fitting overalls and tight-fitting athletic shorts, all of which are common fare for the Berlin dance floor
