Twister, Metal bar & 3 pairs of wooden legs for self assembly Twister is a self-assembly trestle using a metal twisting technique. The product is made of a metal bar and three pairs of wooden legs. Tables of different height can be created depending on the length of the legs. General trestles require two legs to create a table, but the Twister can be used on its own. As it is easy to assemble and disassemble, it's convenient to pack and store. The metal twisting technique has been used for a long time for decor. However, we focused on the angle changes hidden within the decorational feature, and incorporated it into the product for practical purposes.

Bahk Jong Sun is a South Korean artist and designer known for his exquisite and minimalist furniture design. Inheriting philosophy of Joseon dynasty scholars Seonbi who embraced the practical aesthetic of Confucianism, his works emphasize functionality and the principles of “emptying” or clearing away all the excess. Therefore, functionality, simplicity and exquisite craftsmanship are most important characteristics of Bahk Jong Sun’s furniture. Their natural beauty is highlighted not just by the harmony of the simple modernist lines but also by designer’s indulgent relationship with wood.

“Achieving sympathy with the wood itself” is what Bahk Jong Sun values the most in his creative process. His workshop, an old farm building that’s been converted into a modern carpentry studio, is based in Wonju, Gangwon Province where the designer is always surrounded by nature. In a manner of a true artisan, he uses the material that he gathers from the nature around him and allows the wood to dictate the design and communicate its fine beauty through organic forms.

Crystal lights(1601) 100 x 420 x 180 mm, glass, 2016

The Crystal Light series has proven to be the most successful thus far in revealing my identity. The holes are dug in a shape of lens near the surface and light source in order to purify and disperse them. In addition, the ICE series shows my attitudes towards crafts. I purposely did not complete the polishing of the object. The result is that the glass surface is opaque, and has the effect of blocking light. Likewise, I can freely express myself through coldworking, depending on the results of the outputs.

Coldworking is fairly crafty. The purpose of introducing a craft activity in my work is not only to oversee the completion of the output, but also to incorporate the contents into the act itself. I will continue to conduct various tests on materials on the basis of coldworking. Just as God saved mankind at the expense of Jesus, who resembled God himself, I hope to polish glass which I see as resembling myself, and purifying the light.
