Imi Hwangbo received her B.A. in studio art from Dartmouth College. She received her M.F.A. in sculpture from Stanford University, where she studied with the Bay Area Expressionist painter and sculptor Nathan Oliveira. Hwangbo has received numerous international artist fellowships, with residencies at the American Academy in Rome, the Camargo Foundation in France, and at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Scotland. Within the United States, she has acted as an artist-in-residence at Yaddo, Sculpture Space, and at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art.

In support of her work, Hwangbo has been awarded grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and the Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council. She has exhibited her work throughout the country, with shows at the Alternative Museum in New York, the Schmidt/Dean Gallery and the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, Artemisia in Chicago, and the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Imi Hwangbo is an associate professor of art at the University of Georgia.
